No PTI on the Draft this year

Thankfully, they didn't make TK and Mike sit through the Draft this year, just for three cut-ins that last no more than 5 minutes in total.

The less said about the draft coverage the better, other than I loved that necklace Suzy was wearing and I wish Michael Irvin had worn the pinstripe suit/pinstripe shirt combo today, rather than yesterday's preview show.

Let's just say potpourri

We begin with Tony giving a thumb's up to the Maret production of DAMN YANKEES last night. He gives props to the kids, mostly for being able to sing and dance on stage, in font of lots of people.

Turning to sports, TK thinks Archie Manning is getting a bad rap in the whole draft thing, since the Bolts are the ones that went public with it. Andy Polley actually thinks the converse. TK thinks the Chargers will trade the pick and take another QB.

TK didn't want to venture a guess about what the Skins will do in the Draft, but whatever they do, "it will be greeted by hozzanahs."

Is there a draft in Here?

Tony wrote about all things draft-related today in his column today in the Post. Of course, that was written by Justice Ginsberg's decision came down this afternoon. For that ...

We start by talking about DAMN YANKEES. For those in Washington, the show's not sold out, so go on down to the Maret School and the boy not named Budweiser Kornheiser playing Joe Hardy.

Tony has thought all along that it was wrong to keep people out of leagues because of their age. Ironically, today is the 55th birthday of Spencer Haywood, who pioneered the concept of the "early entry" hardship draft in the 1970s.

When Andy brought up that Judge Sheinlin that she had quoted a Wilbon column in her decision, Tony says, "That just brands her as a dope."

Plus, a correction to yesterday's show. Bumblebees do sting. Andy Polley was wrong.

Spring is in the air, and so are the Insects

Tony's happy for the warm weather, but isn't too happy about the "giant bumblebees" flying around.

"How do they know that the first day you can get on the course, they can come out too?" "They are the FATTEST things I've seen in my life."

This discussion segues into talking about cicadas, which are, according to TK, "up to no good." "It's a gotsa go situation."

In other TK family news, Tony went to see his son's dress rehersal in DAMN YANKEES, where Michael is playing Joe Hardy. He's just hoping for the best.

The fellas also briefly talked about the Capitals' lowering ticket prices for next season (if there is one). TK had some good things to say about Teddy Log-On, in that he responds to bad things that happen, unlike The Danny and Abe Pollin.

Andy's new TV

As mentioned last week, Andy Polley finally got a new TV: a 61-inch RCA HD set to go in the Pollin family room (something else to help Andy's children ignore him). The best part of the whole thing may be that Andy took Czaban with him to shop for the set.

We can only hope that Andy takes a picture to go up either on the 980 web page or on Czabe's website. Our best guess is that it looks like this:

Meet the New Boss, Kinda Like the Old Boss

As expected, topic # 1 today was the hiring of John Thompsons III (JT3) as the new coach of Georgetown, replacing the guy who replaced his father. TK thought this was the right choice and has been calling for it since the old coach was fired.

How to recruit now? Tony suggests all you have to say is, "We're getting the band back together."

The guys also discssued how successful the other floated candidate (former Penn coach Fran Dumphy) would have done if JT3 not gotten the job and the role, if any, Big John Thompson, will have with the team now. TK made sure to tweak Big John about his dealings with the press.

The Sports Emmys were briefly discussed. SportsCenter won Best Studio show. PTI was not nominated.

Raiding the Fridge

Tony converses with MD coach Ralph Friedgen, who was in the studio today at Sportstalk 980 for "Fridge Appreciation Day." After asking for better placement for the football helmet on the PTI set, Tony suggested to the coach that Wilbon should wear it on his big fat head.

Tony played on the U of MD Golf Course yesterday, along with Wilbon, MD hoops coach Gary Williams and MD Governor Bob Ehrlich. Tony shot 83 (legit, so he says).

Tony talked with the Fridge about the Maurice Clarett ruling today, where an appellate court ruled in favor of the NFL in the whole draft eligibility issue. Tony also thinks this will have more of an effect on the NBA than the NFL.

The Second Season

Wilbon had a column today about the NBA playoffs. For the record (since he'll probably flip-flop on PTI), he picked Spurs over Pacers in Six. You can read the whole thing here.

Tony Breaks All the Rules

Tony called in late today (at 5:45 instead of 5:30) and broke most of his old rules. He was calling from a car and on a cell phone. The only thing he didn't do is say "How ya doin'?"

He golfed in the morning (shooting 88), did PTI (more on that later) and is going back to Columbia Country Club for a dinner.

Tony offered his advice to Andy Polley about buying a new HD TV set. (Andy's set apparently died yesterday.) TK loves watching his set, especially the channel with clouds, because it reminds him of college and made him want to eat oysterettes.

The boys also discussed Mustang Sally's column in the Post, regarding the Maurice Clarett decision and college football. But Tony's not a lawyer and he doesn't even play one on TV.

On PTI today, Joe Buck and Tim McCarver were the guests for 5 good minutes, previewing tonight's Sox/Yankees game. Thankfully, no mention of the new animated baseball voiced by Tom Kenney aka SpongeBob.

Curse of Les Boulez

More about the futility of the Wizards today. TK compares the plight of the Wizards with the successes of the Grizzlies, thanks mainly to Jerry West.

Tk and company also talked about DC Mayor Anthony Williams' decision to not go to an Orioles game. TK more importantly made fun of the Mayor for using the word "dissed."

Tony also tried to golf today, but just hit balls since it was so windy in DC. TK threatened to possibly "miss" tomorrow's show if he's out hitting the little white ball. He said put a "Q" next to his name for Questionable.

Lies, Damn Lies and Statistics

Tony had a column in the paper today, about all the faldaral over Barry Bonds 660th home run. This segues into a discussion about the overimportance of Statstics in sports today. You can read it here.

There was more of the same from Tony on the radio today: the Bonds coverage, as well as discussing Stephen A. Smith's column in the Inky today about McGwire. Amazingly, the discussion about muscle mass and what not was something TK had today with his trainer (Shar of the one-lb weights).

TK, Andy, Steve and Comcast's Kelli Johnson (snicky alert) also talked about the Wizards and the apparent spat between Gilbert "Coin Flip Kid" Arenas and Jerry "Eight Days a Week" Stackhouse. As Tony said, even if everyone would have been healthy, just how many wins would they have gotten anyway?

New father David Aldridge was today's (in studio) guest on PTI, to preview the NBA playoffs. DA also sided with Tony about LeBron being rookie of the year, but chose Jerry Sloan over Hubie for Coach of the Year.

The big news on PTI today, though, was Tony actually breaking one of the Heads on Sticks (Phil Mikelson). We also got some dual action with Wilbon as the Glove and TK as Hubie, since the two allegedly had an argument after a game last week.

Last, but not least, it's a big 18th birthday for Michael (don't call him Budweiser) Kornheiser. Happy birthday and good luck at Penn.

Day Two of TK's Trip to Augusta

Did you know that the Masters was one of two major sportings events that Mr. Tony had never been to before? (Daytona being the other.)

Some quotes:
"It's prettier in person than you can imagine."
"If you can go, don't go on the weekend. Go Thursday or Friday or even the practice round on Wednesday."

Tony also made sure to have one of the famous Pimento Chesse sandwiches. BTW, TK's sandwich, his son's sandwich and a lemonade only cost $4.00. (So, Michael went back and had some more.)

There was a Chat House today on the Post's Website, but it was another Wilbon solo effort (PTI kept TK busy). Mike also had a column today about Phil and Tiger.

Golf Shots, Nothing but Golf Shots

As I expected, today is the first day that Mr. Tony said he regretted not having the radio show. He said he could have spent all three hours talking about Augusta and the end of the Masters yesterday. Like most people, Tony thought it was just spectacular. There will probably more from TK about his trip (yes, he flew there) and what not.

The Masters was also front and center on PTI, with the entire A block being devoted to Phil, Tiger and the Rest.

PTI in EW

Not much news this weekend.

However, PTI did get some major props in the new issue of Entertainment Weekly (Tarantino cover). PTI was listed in their weekly Top Ten list of "things that are hot" and they put over TK and Wilbon.

Monday should be a cool day, as we should get stories from TK about going to the Masters. I believe Tony usually roots for Mickelson, so one expects him to be happy about the amazing finish to the toonament.

No Tony today

As mentioned yesterday, Tony is steaming (by some means of transport) to Augusta for the "tunament" this weekend. so no radio.

PTI was Wilbon with special guest star David Aldridge in the TK chair.

Interestingly enough, Norman Chad became, I think, the first non-ESPN regular from the radio show to guest on "the show that replaced him." The guy that replaced Tony did say (correctly) how funny Norman was and kindly put TK in the group of funny sports guys worth reading, which also included the always great Charley Pierce.

More Freddy

TK vented about Freddy Adu today in the third of his media, writing a column on the same things he's been saying all week, about Freddy not starting and whatnot. Click HERE for column.

Not surprisingly, Tony ranted about the "soccerheads" that complained about the column and other things. You can imagine his response.

Also, TK and the fellas talked about Kwame Brown. Tony said don't get rid of him yet.

The big news today is that Tony will be going to the Masters (for the first time) this weekend. Monday's recap (on radio and PTI) should be epic.

Good Cop, Bad Cop -- This time for real.

Mr. Tony told us today about his run-in with the law. Fortunately, it was a "good" Mr. Tony moment and not a "bad" Mr. Tony moment. The officer that had pulled TK over let him off, but told him to get back on the radio, because he can't stand the new guy. Testify, Man in Blue.

Tony, Andy and Steve (along with Paul White from McPaper) also discussed the Women's bsketball game,along with speculation about why Sally Jenkins didn't write about the game (possibly because she was written books with Pat Summitt). Also briefly mentioned was the Caps getting the first pick in the NHL draft. TK expects Teddy Log-On to pick "Kwame Brownsinski, from Russia."

No radio today

Due to the Orioles game on WTEM (Sportstalk 980), there was no Tony @ 5.30 segment today.

Today on PTI was the return of Psychic Tony. The guest was ESPN golf analyst and Maryland alum Scott "Fear the Turtle" Van Pelt. Tony also yelled about Freddy Adu again. It turns out Substitute Stat Boy (aka Matt) won the PTI Office Pool.

There was a Chat House today on the Post's website, with only Wilbon participating. (Yes, that was my question in the Chat about Wilbon's wearing shorts on PTI yesterday.) Wilbon also had a column in the Post today about Monday night's basketball game.

You Say Bonjour, I say Adu

Mr. Tony was all revved-up today, amazingly about Freddy Adu. TK couldn't believe that Adu didn't start and said whoever made the decision to play him in the 61st minute should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Over on PTI, tonight's guest was TK's close personal friend and Cuse coach Jim Boeheim. Also, a sure sign that Spring is here: Wilbon's first day on the show wearing shorts.

Lots of columns in the Post today, but none by Tony. You've got your choice of Wilbon, Junior and Norman (Plus Boswell and Mustang Sally).
